Lomond Lakers start their season

The Lomond Lakers Junior B squad got their season underway last weekend, but it wasn’t the kind of start they wanted to their third year in the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL).

The Lakers lost their first game of the season 5-2 to the Cochrane Generals on Friday at the Vulcan District Arena, followed by a 7-2 loss to the same team on Sunday in Cochrane.

On Friday, Cochrane got off to a fast start, taking a 3-0 lead after the first period. The Lakers’ Aiden Gleisner scored the only goal of the second to get Lomond within two goals going into the third period, but Cochrane scored two powerplay goals in the third to take the game out of Lomond’s reach. In between those powerplay goals was a shorthanded marker by the Lakers’ Jonah Desrosiers.

On Sunday, the first period was again the Lakers’ undoing, trailing 4-1 after the opening 20 minutes. Jaxson Deitz scored the Lakers’ goal in the first. The Lakers’ Chase Snider scored early in the second period to trim the deficit to 4-2, but Cochrane replied with three consecutive goals to round out the scoring.

Due to COVID-19, HJHL teams play four consecutive games against a divisional rival before taking a two-week break and then starting another four-game series. Lomond and Cochrane next play this Saturday, starting at 7:30 p.m., at the Vulcan District Arena, followed by their last game of their series on Sunday in Cochrane.

After a two-week break, the Lakers then begin a four-game series with Okotoks, starting Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Vulcan District Arena.
