Letter to the editor: Wind energy tax ripoff

Article content

Notice to all rate payers of the MD of Pincher Creek. Please read the Wind Energy Questionnaire that you received in the mail.

You will notice that the tax revenue on existing wind generation will drop by 55 per cent within the next 10 years.

This is alarming because the Provincial Government allows a tax schedule based on accelerated tax depreciation (10 years) and NOT on useful life (25 years). Taxes paid after 11 years are only a fraction of what they should be.

This is a massive hidden subsidy to this industry on the backs of all ratepayers.

This also amounts to a veiled justification for an ever increasing number of new turbines to keep tax revenues constant.

It is a very real possibility that, at this rate, in 15 years we could have 600-plus wind turbines operating in the MD paying little or no taxes.

If you are alarmed, as I am, complete the Questionnaire today. Demand that our MD Council petition the Provincial Government for fair and constant taxes for “Useful Life” on this commercial enterprise.
